What is a paintless dent repair dent light/reflection board? 💡

A board or light source with a striped or lined pattern. The technician uses the reflection of the lines on the car’s surface to highlight the high and low spots of a dent, making it easier to see and repair.

Check out this short video clip that demonstrates exactly how these specialized boards are used to reveal the subtle contours of a dent. Pay close attention to how the reflected lines become distorted by the damaged area, allowing our PDR technicians to precisely identify and track the repair process.

How is a paintless dent repair dent light/reflection board used?

The board, which often has a striped, gridded, or lined pattern, is positioned so its reflection is cast over the dented area. On a smooth, undamaged panel, these lines appear perfectly straight. However, when the light hits a dent, the lines become distorted, bent, or wavy.

By carefully watching these line distortions, the technician can precisely guide their tools from behind the panel. They work the dent by slowly “massaging” the metal until the distorted lines in the reflection are perfectly straight again, indicating the surface has been returned to its original, smooth condition. Without this visual aid, technicians would be working blind and would be unable to achieve the high level of precision required for a flawless repair.
