Mastering the Art of PDR: A Guide to Glue Pulling
What is Glue Pulling??
Welcome back to our “Paintless Dent Repair 101” series! In our last post, we showed you how the PDR light reflection board helps technicians see even the most subtle dents. Now, we’re diving into one of the most versatile and essential tools in a PDR technician’s arsenal: glue pulling.
Glue pulling is a specialized paintless dent repair technique used to repair dents from the outside of a panel, particularly in areas that are difficult or impossible to access with traditional PDR tools.
Instead of pushing the dent out from behind, this method involves carefully bonding a plastic tab to the dent’s surface and then pulling it outward until the metal returns to its original shape.
The Importance of Glue Pulling in Auto Hail Repair
While traditional PDR tools work by massaging dents from behind the panel, glue pulling is a critical complementary technique, especially for repairing the widespread and varied damage caused by hailstorms.
This method allows our technicians to hail repair dents in areas with no back-side access, such as quarter panels, roof rails, and areas blocked by internal bracing. By “pulling” the dent from the outside, glue pulling eliminates the need to disassemble and reassemble parts of the car’s interior, saving significant time and preserving the vehicle’s structural integrity. This versatility and efficiency make it an indispensable tool for a complete and non-invasive auto hail repair, ensuring a flawless finish while maintaining the car’s original factory paint.
When Do We Use Glue Pulling?
This technique is a lifesaver for dents in complex areas, such as:
- Quarter panels and rails: These areas often have double-layered metal, making it impossible to access from the backside.
- Door edges and seams: The structural design of doors can block tool access to dents near the edges.
- Areas behind braces: Many vehicle panels have internal braces for structural support that get in the way of a PDR tool.
The Paintless Dent Repair Tools of the Trade
A glue-pulling setup includes a few key components:
- Specialized Hot Glue: This isn’t your average craft glue. PDR glue is formulated to create an incredibly strong bond to the vehicle’s paint without causing damage. It also cools quickly and is easy to remove.
- Glue Tabs: These are the small, plastic pieces that are bonded to the dent. They come in a wide range of shapes and sizes to match different dent types and depths.
- A Pulling Tool: This is the device used to apply controlled, outward pressure on the glued tab. Options range from simple T-handle pullers for small dents to sophisticated slide hammers and large-span lifters for more extensive damage.
The Glue Pulling Process
- Clean the Surface: The first step is to thoroughly clean the dented area with an alcohol-based cleaner. Any dirt, wax, or residue will compromise the glue’s bond.
- Apply the Glue Tab: A small amount of hot glue is applied to the appropriate glue tab, which is then pressed firmly onto the center of the dent.
- Pull the Dent: Once the glue has cooled and cured, the pulling tool is attached to the tab. The technician then applies controlled tension, slowly pulling the dent up.
- Repeat and Refine: This process is often repeated multiple times, using different tabs and pulling tools to work the dent out gradually. After the main pull, a technician will use a tap-down tool to gently level any high spots created by the pull, ensuring a perfectly smooth finish.
Why it’s a game-changer in the DFW auto hail repair industry
Glue pulling allows skilled technicians to repair dents that would have previously required traditional bodywork, sanding, and repainting. This not only preserves the vehicle’s original factory finish but also saves a significant amount of time and money for the customer.
