Welcome back to our “Paintless Dent Repair 101” series! In our last post, we showed you how the PDR light reflection board helps technicians see even the most subtle dents. Now, we’re diving into one of the most versatile and essential tools in a PDR technician’s arsenal: glue pulling. 
Glue pulling is a specialized paintless dent repair technique used to repair dents from the outside of a panel, particularly in areas that are difficult or impossible to access with traditional PDR tools.
Instead of pushing the dent out from behind, this method involves carefully bonding a plastic tab to the dent’s surface and then pulling it outward until the metal returns to its original shape.
The Importance of Glue Pulling in Auto Hail Repair
While traditional PDR tools work by massaging dents from behind the panel, glue pulling is a critical complementary technique, especially for repairing the widespread and varied damage caused by hailstorms.
This method allows our technicians to hail repair dents in areas with no back-side access, such as quarter panels, roof rails, and areas blocked by internal bracing. By “pulling” the dent from the outside, glue pulling eliminates the need to disassemble and reassemble parts of the car’s interior, saving significant time and preserving the vehicle’s structural integrity. - Apply the Glue Tab: A small amount of hot glue is applied to the appropriate glue tab, which is then pressed firmly onto the center of the dent.
- Pull the Dent: Once the glue has cooled and cured, the pulling tool is attached to the tab. The technician then applies controlled tension, slowly pulling the dent up.
- Repeat and Refine: This process is often repeated multiple times, using different tabs and pulling tools to work the dent out gradually. After the main pull, a technician will use a tap-down tool to gently level any high spots created by the pull, ensuring a perfectly smooth finish.
